Most puzzle games are competent and forgettable. The ones worth returning to share four properties, and none of them are about graphics.
The rule fits in one sentence
Every durable puzzle format can be stated in a sentence. Fit shapes, clear a line. Two of a kind become one bigger. Find the card’s partner. A game that needs three paragraphs of explanation is usually a game whose rules are doing work its design should be doing.
This is why the classic formats have outlived every trend applied to them. The rule is small enough to hold entirely in mind, which leaves all your attention for the board.
The failure is legible
A good puzzle tells you why you lost. When a block board fills, you can see the hole you left four moves ago. When a physics level fails, you watch the object roll the wrong way and know immediately what to change.
Bad puzzles fail opaquely. You lose, and the honest answer to «why» is that the pieces did not come. Randomness is not the problem — the problem is randomness that cannot be planned around.
The difficulty comes from the design, not the interface
There is a specific kind of bad level that is hard because the controls are imprecise, the board is illegible, or the timer is short enough that reading it is impossible. That is not difficulty; it is friction wearing difficulty’s clothes.
You can usually tell the difference by asking whether you would still fail if you had unlimited time and a perfect hand. If yes, the level is hard. If no, the level is fiddly.
It respects the stopping point
The best puzzle formats let you leave. A jigsaw waits. A sorting board waits. A round of an anagram game is two minutes and complete. Formats that punish stopping — by losing progress, by resetting a streak, by making the next session harder — are optimising for retention rather than for the player.
This is worth noticing because it is the property most often designed away. A game that will not let you stop is not more engaging; it is less trustworthy.
What this means in practice
When something on this site is not worth your time, its page usually says so in one of these terms — the failure is opaque, the difficulty is in the controls, the format does not let you leave cleanly. Those are the honest reasons to skip a game, and they are more useful than a score out of ten.
