Word games split into two families and they suit different moods. In the first you are given letters and asked to make something of them — anagrams, spelling boards, and the tile games where a long word scores far more than three short ones. In the second the words already exist and you have to see them: crosswords, cryptograms, association boards where the link between two words is the answer.
The first family rewards vocabulary breadth. The second rewards patience, and often a willingness to leave a section alone and come back to it, because staring at a cryptogram rarely produces the substitution you missed.
Three of the boards here come from Arkadium and are published by them rather than imitated: their letter-linking board, their tile game with modified classic rules, and their number-substitution grid. They are the most polished things in this section by a clear margin, and they are worth starting with if you have not met them.
One note on what is not here. Word-search grids — the ones where you hunt a list of words in a block of letters — live on a different site in this network, and boards whose whole game is that format are not listed in this section.
