The tangram is a dissection puzzle consisting of seven flat polygons, called tans, which are put together to form shapes.

The objective is to replicate a pattern and generally found in a puzzle using all seven pieces without overlap. Alternatively the tans can be used to create original minimalist designs that are either appreciated for their inherent aesthetic merits or as the basis for challenging others to replicate its outline.

How to Play

  1. Look at the outline and find its longest straight edges.
  2. Place the two large triangles first.
  3. Fill the remaining space with the smaller pieces.
  4. Match the outline exactly to finish.

Tips & Tricks

Place big before small. The large triangles have the fewest legal positions, and once they are down the rest of the board narrows quickly.

How many pieces does a tangram use?

Seven, and every one of them must be used in each outline — that constraint is what makes an arrangement provable rather than approximate.

Can pieces be flipped as well as rotated?

Rotation is the movement the board is built around; the fit has to be exact either way, so a near-miss is a wrong answer.
