Start from the atom with the fewest neighbours. It has the fewest ways to go wrong and usually forces the rest of the sequence.

What happens when I remove an atom?
The atoms around it merge, which is why the order of removals decides whether the level can be finished at all.
Can a level become impossible?
Yes. A wrong removal can strand atoms with nothing to merge into, and there is no warning — restarting is the fix.
