- Drop it where it will merge immediately.
- Keep column heights roughly even.
- Build upward through the values.

Keep one column low deliberately. It is where you put the number that matches nothing, and without it a single odd block ends the run.

Local — you choose a column and only that column is affected, which makes mistakes recoverable in a way the sliding grid does not allow.
